While I've got you, how do you feel about a diff to:
(If there's pushback, maybe like a "one-time hacky copy your old global app settings into the menu script that we don't support" sort of thing? But I'd guess users won't feel like this is too painful since the new menu is a lot more flexible/powerful.)
I think it would potentially be reasonable to not migrate, especially if you do another blog post like the Favorites one to ease migration pain. Global stuff is relatively recent and pretty easy to put back in place, and I think a gentle nudge to configure the menu to work well for your install isn't a bad thing.
Maybe less complainey now that Audit and Differential have fairly sane default "stuff you should do" bucketed queries which can go on a dashboard? But who knows. I tend to think we should make an effort to toss these and see how much pushback we get. In particular, they're very expensive to build relative to their utility (and no one has complained yet that I nuked the Audit count, although it has only been gone for a little while).
@epriestley my assumption here is:

My dashboard changed at some point and no one else seems to care, so let's wait for this to be more than an @epriestley-problem.
At some point after we get this working for Home, I want to replace the "Quick Create" menu with a similar customizable profile menu, resolving T5867.

Also I tried to give you a thorny plant as an offering/warning/omen but it turned out to be a drink. Maybe both were in order.
Clue!
@cspeckmim it's gonna get crazy in here.
I can rename them, maybe MenuItem instead of Panel? I think when I wrote the stuff we had some more panel-like items in mind (like M1450) but haven't ended up building many of them, at least so far (cat facts and progress bar are the only non-item-like-ones, I think). Even if we do build richer stuff later I think MenuItem is reasonably clear.

May be easier to rename Dashboard Panels to Panes or Windows or MacOS
Actually this seems like a lot of work
Do you mind if I rename "ProfilePanelEngine" to "MenuEngine" or something else less vague?
I think fixing the entire dashboards experience should help though. I don't plan to just shoehorn this in.
Oh
One thought about binding them to dashboards is that users won't naturally be able to edit the menu anymore, to personalize it. But maybe we can put some kind of override mechanism on top of it.
oh @epriestley is at the dentist.
CatFactsEngine
Though I feel like we should rename PanelEngine to MenuEngine

Among other issues, arrows are, e.g., ambiguous in this case:
... | | | B | +----------+ +--------+ +----------+ | A | +--------+ | | | C | | | +--------+ +----------+ +----------+ +--------+ | | | D | ...If you click "Move Right" on "Panel A", does it move between panels B and C or between panels C and D?
This has been live for about two months without any substantive issues arising.
I don't plan to implement the rest of the feature request. Assuming drag and drop works correctly, I think this operation (reordering panels) is rare enough that using it is reasonable without introducing the additional complexity of duplicate controls.
It should show a pretty clear preview of what it's going to do before you drop, so I'm not sure how it could be unpredictable? I wasn't able to identify any weird/surprising behavior when I tried to reproduce this.
It's always felt like 10% unpredictable to me, but I haven't tried it in a while.

If this isn't working properly, please file a bug report with complete reproduction steps we can use to reproduce the issue. See Contributing Bug Reports.

I wasn't actually able to reproduce this -- were you, @chad?

Ut seems to be T10145
Or if it isn't, please file a bug report.
I think this change broke dashboard editing slightly. Now when adding a panel to a dashboard column, the same panel gets added twice, once for each column. Removing either of the dupes removes both.

Is it ok for me to retitle this feature request?
per @em
Sure, but in my case they were just freshly created, so the situation was different.
Individually going into a panel to assess frequently seems like quite a workload.
If cleanup is the goal I'd probably opt to build something directly into ApplicationSearch.
In general we don't expect people to need to actively archive panels
Ha! I didn't notice it was a duplicate. I'll closes this and point to T6018. Thanks!
Panels can be embedded anywhere in Remarkup, not just Dashboards or other Panels. In general we don't expect people to need to actively archive panels. It'd be better for us to understand why you need to do this.

Sorry, what is not clear?
Sorry, I'm not sure what I'm missing here.
Can you check out Contributing Feature Requests please and make sure to always state a root problem your having using Phabricator when filing a feature request? Thanks!

Maybe not exactly related but we'd love this feature for harbormaster build status page.

No problem! We know this is pretty tricky to figure out right now, and plan to make it easier next time we do some work on dashboards.
I feel very stupid! Sorry for bothering you guys. A thank you very much for your incredible quick help! I think this should be closed...
Uh wow! Let me try this!
Sorry for the confusion. I know projects and tags are the same. But we have to kinds of tags/projects: Projects and tags. And we need on the dashboard a list which shows only projects.
If you can make the query you want in an application, you can use it in a Dashboard panel by following these steps:
Our problem is that the project panel shows both tags and projects
@epriestley No its about projects not tasks. I'll try to make the query you mentioned. Is there any possibility for custom query panels in the dashboard?
Oh, or I guess you're listing tasks? In that case, can you execute the query you want from Maniphest (at /maniphest/)?
Can you currently execute the query you want from the main query UI in the Projects application (at /project/)?

We haven't seen other confusion about this in context.
We probably need to do almost all of this work before adding new panel types anyway, since building a new panel type on top of CustomFields would make moving everything from CustomFields to EditEngine harder.
