You're welcome to test stable, but I have the same environment here and didn't have any luck, I have a second Windows 8.1 computer I'll test here shortly in case my VM is wonky, too. @epriestley, maybe you can reproduce?
Windows 8.1 EN with Firefox Aurora 38. That said I've had this issue for the last 2-3 versions so it should happen on latest stable Firefox too. I can verify if you want.

The sidebar shows correctly everywhere else, so it's likely an easy fix.
Broken in rP8316c9dc . I guess Firefox doesn't like negative z-indices in terms of showing the color to the user. :/
