Very dense kerning around pipe characters in revision|task titles
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

On the web, the kerning around the "|" character in the title of a Differential revision or Maniphest task is very minimal, meaning it runs into the characters around it. This is a problem at least on OSX Chrome.

Steps to reproduce this:

  • Create a task or revision with "|" in the title (like this one).
  • Look at the title on the revision's or task's page; the characters run together in a somewhat difficult-to-read way around the pipe character.

We're running 216f6be11ece53cb1daafc8fff636dbdb0d7ef3d, not the SHA given above.

Also an out of date version of Phabricator.

5e16e460396e changed the header fonts, from Aleo to Lato. It's a different font on this install than the version you're running internally.

Good to know. Thanks!

I expect it to be better, but I don't know offhand. If it's still a problem, knowing real title cases might be helpful. It sounds like some sort of metadata is being set in the task title?

It does look significantly better on secure.phabricator.com than it does on the internal version, at least to me, so I suspect the changed font resolves this.

This came up organically trying to represent a user-visible string with two versions that differ only by a word in a succinct way: Remove the "Served by a foo|bar server" text from the site is a rough approximation. Certainly it could be represented differently without a pipe character.

Slack has the best version of Lato they home-cooked to have more letter-spacing. I wish it was open source.

Not that I've geeked out about it.
