Fixes T12418. This is a fairly advanced feature and I think users can reasonably consult the documentation for their own editors to figure out how to do this.

You seem to be only considering Mac editors, where URLs seem to be a fairly standard way of launching editors that is documented in the editor's own documentation.
The replacement URL mentioned in T12418 also contains information for enabling this feature in Windows and Linux, which is not widely available elsewhere.
I seem to have found plenty of resources for Linux/Windows, including the link you suggest, after spending a minute or two Googling:
https://github.com/smartystreets/goconvey/wiki/Opening-files-in-your-editor-from-the-Web-UI
http://askubuntu.com/questions/514125/url-protocol-handlers-in-basic-ubuntu-desktop
https://support.shotgunsoftware.com/hc/en-us/articles/219031308-How-to-launch-external-applications-using-custom-protocols-rock-instead-of-http-
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/389204/how-do-i-create-my-own-url-protocol-e-g-so
So I think these resources are widely available -- by Googling -- based on my empirical success in locating them by Googling.
