Yes, the behavior depends on the shell. I was using bash.

Indeed very annoying. Updated our instance to 16.04.1 yesterday, and my day was not so happy any more. Of course this is not Phabricators fault, but I doubt that reading the Ubuntu release notes would have helped as the problem is not that obvious.
