Add syntax to refer to tickets that includes title when expanding in place
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

It's really not uncommon to refer to a task in another task or in a wiki doc and ending up repeating or paraphrasing its title e.g. "We can do this after the new view controller system has been implemented (T8)." The worst case being when having to list several tasks say in a wiki doc, which becomes a lot of copy-pasting. And then there's the out of sync problem where if a task's title is updated to a significant degree that would matter, whatever refers to it is not.

I would like to suggest a simple syntax extension for tasks that would expand to both the ticket number and its title:

  • T38 becomes the usual T38 gray box.
  • T38+ becomes a expanded box "Title of Ticket" (T38).

It's hopefully quite easy to implement, does not break backward compatibility in any way, and I'm sure would be one of these little details that people really appreciate. I'm not aware of any task that has such a feature for instance.

To go back to the original example, it would become: "We can do this after T38+ is done" (quite shorter to type and no paraphrasing needed) which expands to "We can do this after "Implement new view controller system" (T38) is done".

Of course, where you really end up saving time, it's when listing tasks e.g.

Action items resulting from meeting on May 15th:
- T25+
- T26+
- T27+
- T28+
- T29+

This is so much easier :)

Sorry about this, I can't believe I missed that, for some reason I thought it was for media, not tasks and revisions!

Pretty much everything should work. One issue is that we don't strikethru closed tasks in that form; see T3510 for that.

Ah that's too bad! I was looking forward to tell the team about this super neat feature especially for lists of tasks, but not knowing the task has been fixed does limit its usefulness. In your own comment for instance, I could only notice you didn't use the feature:
