Summary

This is a first cut at a slimmer, updated navbar. Passing along an in progress diff for feedback. It does pass the zoom test.

I will likely split up the homepage and sidebar navs with slightly different headers (I don't feel we need such visually large headers on normal sidebars).

TODO: mobile.y

Test Plan

Hover, Zoom, Scroll, Click. Homepage and Sidebar navs.

Event Timeline

I'd ideally like to retain the subtitles (e.g., "Browse Code", "Review Code") since I think they materially help new users, if possible.

Does reducing the black gutters in the smaller tiles to 1px (i.e., the same width as the black gutters between the larger tiles) look nasty? It has always seemed a touch off to me.

This looks great to me otherwise.

On the subtitles, not sure what the right immediate solution is there. Long term it's best if we don't have them and have a great NUX for n00bs when they first use the product. However that's a bit of work.

Maybe, possibly:

  • Better blank states for all the apps, with simple descriptions and links to get started.
  • "title" attribute on all the app icons in the list
  • One page 'bootcamp' into all the apps of Phabricator and what they do (this lives, where? Diviner?)

Mainly though, these are links that get used 50x a day, and the subtitle info is only useful the first few uses, so I'd rather have that space to show more apps (and have to scroll less).

Since this is a WIP, I'd probably roll out titles and blank states first, then land this when ready (and more polished).

  • Remove mobile gradient, add titles to large tiles
epriestley edited edge metadata.

Yeah, in the long term the subtitles aren't a good fix, I just worry it will take a while until we're able to provide a more complete NUX.

I think this is good to go whenever you're comfortable with it, I don't see any substantive issues with it.

I'm probably going to noodle on this another day.
