Per https://github.com/git/git/commit/c41dd2fd7d3a16e6f0b1629d688bee3240db496c it looks like git-grep search with -f was added in 1.7.5, meaning older git versions will produce an exception.
- Install an older git (1.7.1)
- Try any search
